145 - MiTo   1.4 16v TJet   STARTER MOTOR OPERATION CHECK   5520BB

STEP

CHECK TO BE CARRIED OUT

SOLUTION IF CHECK IS NOT OK

1

Check the battery charge status

Using MIDTRONICS instrument n. 1806515000 instrument, check the condition of the battery. Check the (+) and (-) terminals are correctly tightened on the respective battery poles

Go to Step 2

1. Recharge and/or replace the battery

   Op. 5530B10 BATTERY - R+R

2. Restore the correct tightening for the battery terminals

2

Visual inspections of +30 cable

Check that along the cable at terminal T30 secured to the starter motor there are no signs of overheating and/or sparking (see Fig.1)

Go to Step 3

Replace the lead

Op. 5530B26 LEAD BETWEEN BATTERY AND STARTER MOTOR - R+R

3

Check the condition of the starter motor

Check that the motor casing is free of damage or dents (see Fig.2)

Check that the draining hole shows no signs of melted material coming out (see Fig.3)

Go to Step 4

Replace the starter motor

   Op. 5520B10 STARTER MOTOR - R.R.

4

Check that the ignition key return is correct

Check that there is binding when the key is released during engine start-up (see Fig. 4)

It is recommended to carry out the test with the battery (+) cable disconnected.

Go to Step 5

Replace the ignition key lock barrel

Op. 5520A14 IGNITION KEY LOCK BARREL - R+R

5

Tightening torque check

Check that the tightening torques of all the terminals connected to the starter motor are correct (see Fig. 5)

1. All polarities (+)

2. All earths

3. Terminals T30 and T50

Go to Step 6

Restore the correct tightening torques to the starter motor

6

Check that the motor has been assembled correctly

Check that the motor flange and gearbox cover are correctly in contact and that the nuts securing the motor to the cover are correctly tightened (see Fig. 6)

Go to Step 7

1. Replace the starter motor

   Op. 5520B10 STARTER MOTOR - R.R.

2. Restore the correct tightenings

7

Starter motor noise check

Disconnect the engine management control unit and start the engine using the key (the engine obviously will not start) and check if the noise is still present

If the noise disappears search for the cause by starting with the other engine components

End of diagnosis

Replace the starter motor

   Op. 5520B10 STARTER MOTOR - R.R.
