PRELIMINARY CHECKS

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Having carried out the road test

See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING

there was a squeaking/creaking noise from the front.

Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs.

End of diagnosis

1. The noise is noticeable during steering, even with the vehicle stationary

2. The noise only occurs whilst moving.

1. Move on to Step 1

2. Move on to Step 2

1

MC PHERSON MOVING ELEMENTS CHECK

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Check that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber buffer plate (visible from the engine compartment side)

End of diagnosis

1.The buffer plate is loose.

2. There is contact between the rubber part of the plate and the bodyshell.

1.Tighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer plate does not move any more.

2. Place a shim no larger than 2 mm in between.

2

DUST COVER CHECK

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Check that the dust cover is not rubbing against the shock absorber casing, by moving it and applying pressure and releasing it above the shock absorber casing

Move on to Step 3

There is rubbing.

Replace the end of travel buffer

Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R

3

END OF TRAVEL BUFFER CHECK

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Check that the end of travel buffer is correctly inserted in its housing (raise the dust guard).

Move on to Step 4

1.End of travel buffer incorrectly inserted (correct insertion is with the largest diameter side facing up).

2. End of travel buffer deteriorated.

1. Replace the end of travel buffer

Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R

2. Replace the end of travel buffer

Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R

4

CHECKS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Check that there are no pipes, cables or shields in the engine compartment that could cause interference when the engine moves.

Move on to Step 5

Components incorrectly positioned.

Reposition the components correctly.

5

UNDERFLOOR CHECKS

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Position the vehicle on a two column lift and raise it.

Check that there are no pipes or heat shields under the floor that are producing noise.

Also check that springs on the layout brackets are not a source of noise

Move on to Step 6

1.Pipes or heat shields incorrectly fastened.

2. Springs or rubber mountings damaged.

1.Restore correct tightening.

2.Replace the faulty components.

6

TRACK CONTROL ARM BUSHES CHECK

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Check the condition of the track control arm front and rear bush

Move on to Step 7

1. Front bush not intact.

2. Rear bush not intact.

1. Replace the lower track control arm

Op. 4410B40 LOWER TRACK CONTROL ARM (WITH BALLJOINT) FOR LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION (ONE) - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

2. Replace the lower track control arm

Op. 4410B40 LOWER TRACK CONTROL ARM (WITH BALLJOINT) FOR LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION (ONE) - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

7

ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKS

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Check that there are no faults with the anti-roll bar

See Test 4410CA FRONT ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKS

Specifically:

- Anti-roll bar correctly positioned in relation to the centre-line of the vehicle

- Paint not worn at the points where the bar and the track control arms come into contact

- Condition of flexible mounting in the contact area with the bar

- Fastenings tightened to torque between bar and crossmember.

- Fastenings tightened to torque between the bar and rod and between the rod and shock absorber bracket.

Move on to Step 8

1. Torque tightenings not correct.

2. Bar not correctly positioned.

3. Paint worn at the contact points (rubbing between bar-track control arms)

4. Signs of tears/damage to flexible mounting.

1. Restore the correct tightening.

2. Replace the anti-roll bar

Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

3. Replace the anti-roll bar

Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

4. Replace the anti-roll bar

Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

8

SPRING/SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY CHECK

ALL OK

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

ACTION

Check that the mountings fastening the suspension to the body (at the shock absorber turrets) do not show signs of wear on account of rubbing.

The shock absorber must be removed for this check

Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R

Also check that the positioning and the fitting of the semi-corner assembly (spring-shock absorber assembly) is correct.

Check that there are no signs of rubbing on the suspension spring at its supports.

Also check that the spring shows no signs of wear.

End of diagnosis

1. Positioning or fitting of semi-corner assembly not correct

2. Signs of tears/damage to shock absorber mountings/rubber washers

3. Spring worn.

4. Signs of rubbing between spring and supports.

1. Restore the correct fitting/positioning of the components

2. Replace the components and ensure they are correctly positioned.

3. Replace the shock absorber spring

Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R

(ensuring that the first coil is correctly positioned on the shock absorber plate, 4 mm at most from the contact point).

4. Refit correctly.

If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.

Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is creaking or clicking coming from the front suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after

See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING

Carry out the latter first.
