145 - MiTo   1.4 16v TJet   NOISE WHEN USING ELECTRIC STEERING WITH VEHICLE STATIONARY   H027

1

NOISE TYPE CHECK

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Check the type of noise reported.

-

Electric type noise (buzzing or vibrations) (with the system activated).

Move on to Step 2

Noise similar to grating plastic (with system not activated).

Move on to Step 3

Noise similar to the reversal of the steering wheel (with the system activated) or a series of multiple bangs when steering.

Move on to Step 4

Metallic and/or mechanical type noise during steering wheel adjustment.

Do not intervene: noise is normal because the mechanical parts involved are released to allow the movement of the steering wheel.

2

NOISE INTENSITY CHECK (BUZZING OR VIBRATIONS)

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Check the intensity of the noise

-

The noise is not very intense. It cannot be heard on the passenger side.

DO NOT intervene: slight noise is normal in an EPS system.

The noise consists of strong vibrations of the steering wheel, constantly or in certain steering positions.

Replace the Electric Steering assembly.

 Op. 4110D20 STEERING ELECTRICAL CONTROL DEVICE - R R

The constant electrical buzzing noise is very intense.

Replace the Electric Steering assembly.

INTERFERENCE CHECK

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Check for any interference with the surrounding plastic parts.

Op. 4110A10 STEERING WHEEL - R+R FOR REPLACEMENT OR CHECKS

Move on to Step 4

The steering wheel is in contact with the upper and/or lower trim.

Refit the steering column switch unit and steering wheel cover correctly.

The noise disappears without the air bag and/or without the steering column switch unit.

Do not repair the EPS system, rather the defective component.

4

CHECK ON NOISE FROM OTHER COMPONENTS

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Check (with the system activated) that the nut for the fork on the steering box pinion and on the lower part of the EPS system are correctly tightened to torque, then make sure that the noise is no longer present by moving the steering wheel briskly.

End of diagnosis.

The fault occurs again, especially when the steering wheel is moved briskly.

DO NOT replace the EPS system. Problem with the intermediate shaft.

The Customer complains of noise from the electric steering system with the vehicle stationary.
