OPERATIONS AT THE DEALERSHIPS
Further to several complaints from Customers, we must underline the importance of checking and restoring the correct tyre pressure before handing the car over to final Customers, and of always performing the system RESET of the indirect T.P.M.S. (iTPMS), when installed.
In addition, on cars with direct T.P.M.S, check that the values shown on the instrument cluster are accurate.
Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System (iTMPS)
The indirect TPMS (iTPMS) is installed on the following cars:
-
Panda, 500 (EMEA), Grande Punto, Ypsilon, 500L (EMEA), Tipo, 500X (EMEA), Giulietta and Fiorino/Qubo.
Description
-
The iTPMS (indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is able to detect that one or more tyres have deflated beyond a certain level and alert the driver by means of a light and a warning message on the instrument cluster.
-
The iTPMS does not have its own sensors; it is controlled by the ABS/ESC control unit, which uses the wheel speed sensors and a complex calculation algorithm to detect different tyre rolling speeds, and then assume that there has been a change in its perimeter, signalling its deflation.
-
In order to operate correctly, the system must be Reset after the tyre pressure has been set correctly.
The Reset is required in the following situations:
-
Before the car is consigned to the Customer, after setting the pressure of all tyres correctly.
-
Whenever the tyre pressure is changed.
-
Whenever the tyre positions are swapped on the vehicle.
-
Whenever one or more tyres are changed.
-
When the iTPMS warning light comes on, after checking that the pressure of ALL tyres is correct.
-
When the Fix&Go kit is used.
The Reset procedure comprises the following phases:
1.Make sure that the tyres are cold, and set the pressure of all the tyres as indicated in the Owner Handbook or on the door pillar.
2.Switch on the instrument cluster (Key-On).
3.With the vehicle stationery, perform the iTPMS Reset using the button provided or from the menu, checking that the light flashes twice and that the panel indicates that the Reset procedure has been accepted (refer to the Owner Handbook for the specific details for each car).
|
If the Reset is carried out without having correctly adjusted the pressure, the system cannot work properly and can illuminate the warning light even if the pressure is correct, or do not illuminate it if there is insufficient tyre pressure.
If no tyre seems deflated, the pressure of the 4 tyres may have naturally decreased.
It is not possible to Reset with the vehicle in motion

Direct T.P.M.S.
The direct TPMS is installed on the following cars:
-
500 (NAFTA), Grande Punto/Punto Evo, Idea, 500L (NAFTA), 500X (NAFTA), Bravo, Linea, Croma, Freemont, Ulysse, Fiorino/Qubo (225/300), Doblò (152/263), Ducato (290), 4c, 8C, 159, Musa, Delta, Phedra, Thema, Voyager, Flavia, Scudo (272), Talento, Giulia, Stelvio, MiTo, 159, Brea/Spider and Renegade
Description
-
The direct TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) monitors the pressure of the tyres, sending the necessary information to the Body Computer via the digital network (CAN).
-
The system consists of sensors fitted in the inflation valve of each wheel, which monitor the pressure of each tyre and send the information to the control module via a radiofrequency signal.
-
The radiofrequency module (RFH module, or specific TPMS control module) receives and processes the data sent by the sensors. If the pressure value obtained is too low, the system alerts the driver by switching on a light and/or a warning message on the instrument cluster (refer to the Owner Handbook for the specific details for each car).
Sensor self-learning
In the case of:
-
Replacement of one or more sensors
-
Change in the position of a wheel (e.g. swapping front and rear tyres)
Perform the procedure in order to memorise the sensor ID code in the control unit so that the control unit can recognize them as belonging to the system and consequently manage the RF signals coming from them.
This procedure can be carried out using the diagnosis equipment or through the self-learning procedure, which consists of driving the car at more than 20 km/h for approximately 20 minutes to allow the self-learning of the sensor IDs.
