Cancels and replaces the SN 70.02.10 of 05/02/2010 for the upgrade of the Operating cycle on cars with right hand drive

FAULT COMPLAINED OF

Battery/alternator warning light switching on; noise, occasional white smoke and smell from engine compartment.

TECHNICAL CAUSE

In case of very low temperatures (below zero), the drain water from the windscreen base trim can freeze, causing a seizure of the alternator pulley, followed by slipping and possible breaking of the drive belt.

OPERATIONS IN NETWORK

Network behaviour standards towards the Customer

-Once this problem is reported and confirmed, reassure the Customer that the failure will be solved by replacing the water drain pipe from the windscreen base trim with a new, improved one; after suitable checks, also the possibly damaged components (alternator, belt and belt tensioner) can be replaced where required.-After the operation, show the Customer what has been done and make sure he is satisfied.

Service Solution

If the claimed failure is confirmed, make sure the service belt breakage is due to water presence in the alternator area; if water freezes, it can limit/prevent the rotation of the alternator or of the other pulleys operating the service belt.

Restore the service belt operation and replace the water drain pipe from the windscreen base trim with a new one, differently shaped, to deviate drain water jet. Install the drain pipe as described in the cycle below, making sure it is not clogged by adjacent elements in the engine compartment.

After suitable checks, replace also the possibly damaged components (alternator, belt and belt tensioner) according to the Operating Cycle below.

OPERATION CYCLE

Working in the engine compartment, make sure the claimed failure is due to ice on the alternator/pulleys/belt tensioner.

Restore the operation of the damaged elements and replace the water drain pipe from the service tray to the windscreen base.

Remove the water drain pipe (1 - Fig. 1) on the right side of the windscreen base trim (alternator/service belt side) and replace it with a new flexible sleeve (2), part no. 51810013 from the Spare Part Dpt.

The new sleeve is like the sleeve (A) on the left side of the windscreen base trim.

For all right-hand drive engines, 1.3 Mjet 90 HP Euro 4 excluded, direct the new sleeve (2) towards the inside of the car, as shown.

    On all engines on cars with left-hand drive and 1.3 Mjet 90 HP Euro 4 with right-hand drive, the flexible sleeve (2) must be directed towards the mudguard (outside the car), as shown.

      Only for right hand drive versions, seal the tray under the windscreen implementing Service News 70.03.10.

      Check the conditions of alternator, belt and belt tensioner and replace them with new components, from the Spare Part Dpt., if required, referencing to the Service Manual.
