Description

1.4 16v 95 bhp engine

The new version of the Alfa MiTo is equipped with a petrol engine, illustrated in Fig.1, similar to the current 78 bhp version, which provides a maximum power output of 95 bhp at 6000 rpm; the Engine Management Control Unit is also new.

Fig. 1 - Power unit

    The new 95 bhp engine, like the current 78 bhp version, has 4 cylinders in line with a twin overhead camshaft, 16 valves regualted by and continuous phase timing variator and engine management with a Bosch integrated electronic injection-ignition system.

    The timing control is produced through a toothed belt and hydraulic tappets.

    The variation in turbulence, between low speeds and full load conditions, is achieved through a slider valve (3 - Fig. 2) composed of a suitably shaped plate that slides between the intake manifold and the cylinder head plane opening or closing one of the two inlet ducts for each cylinder.

    Intake manifold

    The intake manifold illustrated in Fig. 2 has an intake manifold shuttering system integrated in the connecting flange with the cylinder head.

    Fig. 2

      The manifold consists of:

      1. Slider valve plate;

      2. Slider valve position switch;

      3. Solenoid valve - pneumatic actuator (slider);

      4. Control linkage;

      5. Vacuum accumulator;

      a. Slider valve plate travel.

      1.4 Turbo Petrol 120 bhp engine

      The new version is equipped with a 1.4 120 bhp Turbo Petrol engine (Fig. 3) whose main features, like the 1.4 Turbo Petrol 155 bhp version are: performance, responsive acceleration, low consumption, simple construction, robustness and reliability.

      Fig. 3

        The 1.4 Turbo Petrol engine has a maximum power output of 120 bph at 5000 rpm and a maximum torque of 206 Nm at 1750 rpm

        This allows extremely flexible driving, with a reduced use of the gearbox, whether pleasant and relaxing driving is desired or when the driver wants a powerful response from the engine during kick down.

        The reduced inertia of the turbocharger allows maximum performance without the normally tiresome associated delays.

        Special attention has been paid to the design of the fluidynamics and to combustion to minimize energy losses and produce excellent performance whilst keeping consumption down.

        There is a fixed geometry Garrett turbocharger.

        1.3 JTDC 90 bhp engine

        The new version is available with a 1.3 JTDM engine illustrated in Fig. 4 already used on other Group models. It is a 1248cc Common Rail direct injection diesel engine with 4 cylinders in line with a bore of 69.6 mm and a stroke of 82 mm.

        There are four valves per cylinder operated directly by a twin overhead camshaft. The maximum power output is 66 kW at 4000 rpm (90 bhp) with a torque of 200 Nm at only 1750 rpm.

        Fig. 4

          The 1.3 JTDM engine has been designed with the criteria of maximum practicality, efficiency and reliabilityin mind; it is the only one capable of containing six normal size components in a cylinder with a diameter of less than 70 mm (in other words four valves, an injector and a spark plug).

          Complete with all accessories it weighs around 130 kg with a component layout designed to reduce dimensions.

          Fig. 5

            The Multijet system

            The 1.3 JTDM 90 bhp version is equipped with a Common Rail Multijet injection system; like on larger capacity engines, this system is the most technologically advanced solution for high injection pressure applications.

            The engine management system is capable of introducing small amounts of fuel with the main injection (the quantity of fuel injected to provide the performance requested by the driver), guaranteeing particularly smooth engine operation in all situations.

            The adoption of an electrically activated EGR valve, managed directly by the engine management system, the use of a recirculation exhaust gas cooling system and a catalytic converter make it possible to meet the current emission limits.

            Gearboxes

            The following type of gearbox is fitted on the 1.4 16v 95 bhp version:

            C514 with 6 forward speeds with synchromesh plus reverse;

            Braking system

            The new versions of the MiTo are available (like the current versions - see SN 00.10.08) with the most sophisticated electronic and mechanical auxiliary systems such as, for example VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) a vehicle stability control system, which helps maintain directional control if the tyres lose grip.

            The VDC, in turn, includes the following systems:

            -Hill Holder-ASR-Brake Assist-MSR-CBC-ELECTRONIC Q2 (E-Q2)-DST

            Braking system specifications

            Depending on the engine type, the system differs as described below:

            1.4 16v 95 bhp engine types

            The braking system, already used on the 1.4 16 v 78 bhp version, features the use of:
