Detail     Detail

The battery terminals should only be disconnected with the ignition key on STOP or the key extracted; never with the key on MAR-ON or the engine started. The battery terminals should only be disconnected after waiting at least 1 minute after turning the ignition key to STOP.

All the operations should be carried out taking great care to avoid personal injury.

The engine compartment contains many moving parts, components at high temperatures and live wires. Follow the precautions below very carefully when working in the engine compartment:

  • Switch off the engine and wait for it to cool down.

  • No smoking.

  • No naked flames.

  • Make sure that there is a fire extinguisher nearby.

The use of special Fiat tools is required for certain procedures. The use of these tools is vital for working safely.

Follow the current workshop safety regulations. Where necessary, the Manual contains specific procedures to be followed to prevent dangerous situations from arising.

For the use of chemical products follow the safety instructions on the card from the supplier to the consumer (for Italy in accordance with Ministerial Decree No. 47/1992).

All the operations should be carried out taking great care to avoid damaging components.

To release parts that are sticking, tap gently using an aluminium or lead hammer if iron materials are involved; use a wooden or resin hammer for light alloy parts.

When dismantling, check that components that should be marked have the appropriate references.

When refitting, lubricate the parts, where necessary, to prevent seizing or binding during the initial operating period.

When refitting it is vital to follow the tightening torques and adjustment data.

Each time they are refitted, replace gaskets, oil seals, flexible washers, circlips, self-locking nuts and all parts that have deteriorated.

The LPG system used meets requirements in the individual countries where it is marketed.

One-way valves are fitted on the tank next to the LPG filler pipe from the filler to prevent gas accidentally flowing out from the tank.

The solenoid valves are located one on the tank near the supply pipe and one on the pressure regulator; they isolate the section of the supply pipe when petrol fuel mode is selected or when the engine is off.

The one-way valve on the filler prevents the LPG in the filler pipe from returning to the outside.

Despite the presence of these devices, remember that LPG is still a gas under ambient conditions and thus can easily explode. Always respect the following precautions when leaks are potentially present and during any service operations on the system.

  • do not smoke,

  • do not use naked flames,

  • do not use driers and power tools,

  • do not use incandescent lamps,

  • do not wear acrylic clothing which generates static electricity,

  • always disconnect the battery terminals,

  • never park the vehicle, when stored in the workshop, next to working pits, drain holes for intake ducts, closed areas without suitable ventilation; RISK OF EXPLOSION: LPG is heavier than air and tends to sink to the lowest possible level. It will therefore fill any openings near the car creating dangerous, potentially explosive pockets of gas.

  • do not use workshop tools such as air compressors, current generators, suction devices, power tools etc. that could generate sparks and trigger explosions in the event of leaks,

  • do not use any type of suction device; always work in ventilated areas,

  • do not park vehicles with LPG systems in closed environments if they have been in an accident or if the condition of the system sealing devices is uncertain,

  • if the car goes into a drying oven after painting, at temperatures over 80°C, the LPG control unit and the LPG tank must be removed from the vehicle itself.

After having removed one or more of the LPG system components, carrying out the leak detection test is compulsory either with the leak detector or a foam solution; operate on faulty components as described in the appropriate procedures.
