145 - MiTo   1.4 16v TJet   Steering Wheel Position Sensor (Subfault)   C0051

The diagnostic equipment signals the following error: "C0051 - Steering Angle Sensor (NGE)"

This error is signalled if there is a short circuit at the CAN (supply or earth), if the sensor is damaged or not correctly fitted.

Error C0051 can also occur after the battery has been disconnected and reconnected or as a result of difficulties in starting because the information coming from the electric steering is not felt to be valid by the NFR.

PRELIMINARY CHECKS

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Check whether the battery has been disconnected and reconnected in the workshop or if the ESP warning light has come on after difficulties in starting

Go to Step 2

1. The ESP warning light stayed on after removing/refitting the battery 2. The ESP warning light stayed on after difficult cranking.

1. Go to Step 1

2. Go to Step 1

1

VALIDATION OF STEERING ANGLE INFORMATION

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Carry out a key on and, after the warning light check, turn the steering wheel a few degrees around the zero (wheels straight) position. Then carry out a key off/key on

Go to Step 6

The ESP warning light does not go out

Go to Step 2

CHECKS USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Connect the diagnostic equipment and check the operation of the steering angle sensor.

To do this enter the PARAMETERS ambient and display the STEERING ANGLE parameter: the values should decrease when the steering wheel is turned in a clockwise direction (to the right) and increase when it is turned in the opposite direction.

End of diagnosis

Failed or irregular operation of the steering angle sensor:

Go to Step 3

WHEEL TOE IN CHECK

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Check the toe in of the front and rear wheels

Go to Step 4

The vehicle has lost its toe in

Restore the original toe in values.

4

CAN CHECK

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Detach the connector for the brake control unit and check, using the tester, that the control unit side circuit resistance is 120 Ohms like on the connector side

Go to Step 4

Faults in CAN connections

Restore the correct connections.

5

ELECTRICAL CHECKS

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Check electric steering power voltage (power pins 1 and 2). Check wiring from NFR to NGE (no SC to Vbat, SC to Gnd).

Go to Step 6

Power supply not correct

Restore the correct power supply and replace the faulty components if necessary.

6

CORRECT OPERATION CHECK

All OK

Problems encountered

Operation

Delete the errors using the diagnostic equipment.

Road test

See Test 3350EB STEERING ANGLE SENSOR OPERATION CHECK

to ensure that the control unit checks whether there are any errors still present.

Return to the workshop and check that the fault is no longer present using the Examiner.

End of diagnosis

The fault persists.
