145 - MiTo   1.4 16v TJet   INTRODUCTION - SUSPENSION AND WHEELS

One of the main aims of this vehicle has been to increase the general level of comfort, especially driveability and road holding, guaranteeing standards reserved for vehicles in a higher segment with excellent handling qualities.

The technological solutions adopted to reach this goal can be summarized as follows:

- Increased track (front and rear) and adoption of tyres made for improved driving stability.

- Front suspension geometry with Mc-Pherson independent configuration, with anti-roll bar, spring and shock absorber unit to fit the new body, oversized lower suspension arms with rectangular wishbone for improved insulation between the effect of braking and cornering loads, guaranteeing better balance in all driving conditions. Despite the wider track, redesigning the front geometry combined with the steering box travel has allowed the vehicle turning circle to be kept down.

- Rear suspension (Fig. 20) with semi-independent wheels connected by torsion axle, with the aim of increasing structural rigidity and maintaining good suspension flexibility in load conditions, produced through a strengthened rubber-metal bush connecting the axle to the bodyshell. The design of the suspension has also involved the adoption of springs, shock absorbers and buffers in order to adapt to a strengthened bodyshell and improve dynamic response round bends.

- Front and rear contracting shock absorbers fitted as standard on all trim levels and engine types, featuring a spring fitted on the inside that acts on the extension travel in parallel to the main spring.

- Rigid and lowered front and rear springs to give the vehicle a sporty feeling, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality.
